How to Free Up Phone Storage Without Deleting Your Photos

Phone storage fills up faster than ever. Before buying a new phone or paying for more cloud storage, try these fixes first.

Step 1: Identify What's Using Space

iOS: Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Android: Settings → Storage. This breakdown shows exactly what's consuming space.

The Usual Culprits

Photos and Videos

Usually the biggest offender. Enable iCloud Photos or Google Photos backup, then delete local copies. You keep access to everything but free local storage.

Apps You Never Use

Sort apps by size. Delete anything you haven't opened in 3 months.

App Caches

Streaming apps (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube) cache enormous amounts of data. Clearing cache regularly saves hundreds of MB.

Messages and Attachments

Years of message attachments accumulate. In Messages settings, set auto-delete to 1 year.

Downloads Folder

PDFs, documents, images downloaded from the web. Usually forgotten and significant.

Ongoing Habits

  • Monthly: Clear streaming caches
  • Quarterly: Delete unused apps
  • Annually: Review and delete downloaded files

If All Else Fails

A USB-C flash drive (works as phone external storage) is a cheap, permanent solution.
