Air Purifiers: What Actually Works, What Doesn't, and What to Buy

Air purifiers have become mainstream since 2020 and the market is crowded with products of wildly varying effectiveness. Here's what actually works and why.

How Air Purifiers Actually Work

HEPA Filtration

True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger. This includes dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and most bacteria. The gold standard for particle removal.

Activated Carbon

Absorbs gases, VOCs, and odors. Not captured by HEPA. A good purifier has both HEPA and activated carbon layers.

UV-C Light

Kills bacteria and viruses but requires significant dwell time to be effective. Marginally useful in most consumer purifiers where airflow is too fast.

Ionizers

Charge particles so they clump and fall. Can produce ozone (a lung irritant). Generally avoid unless ozone-free certification is confirmed.

What DOESN'T Work

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) purifiers produce harmful byproducts. Ozone generators should never be used in occupied spaces. Ionic purifiers without HEPA capture very little.

Sizing Matters Most

Every purifier has a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating and recommended room size. Buy a purifier rated for 1.5-2x your actual room size for effective air cleaning at lower, quieter fan speeds.
