LED Strip Lights Guide: Types, Installation and Smart vs Non-Smart

LED strip lights are one of the most versatile and affordable ways to add accent lighting to any space. Here's how to choose, install, and control them properly.

Types of LED Strips

Single Color

White only (warm or cool). Cheapest. Good for under-cabinet task lighting, stair lighting, and areas where color isn't needed.

RGB

Red, Green, Blue. Mixes colors. Can produce most visible colors but not great whites or pastels.

RGBW / RGBIC

RGB plus a dedicated white channel. Produces clean whites and pastel tones RGB can't achieve. More expensive but noticeably better quality light.

RGBIC (Individual Control)

Each LED segment can display different colors simultaneously. Creates flowing, segmented color effects. Best for entertainment and gaming setups.

Choosing Brightness

Measured in lumens per meter. For accent lighting: 200-400 lm/m. For task lighting: 400-800 lm/m. For primary room lighting: 800+ lm/m.

Smart vs Non-Smart

Smart strips (Govee, Philips Hue, LIFX) connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for app and voice control, music sync, and automations. Non-smart strips use a basic remote. Smart is worth the premium for any visible installation.

Installation Tips

• Clean surface thoroughly before adhesive application
• Use aluminum channels for professional appearance and heat dissipation
• Cut only at designated cut points
