6 Free Fixes That Make Your Wi-Fi Dramatically Faster
Your Wi-Fi is probably slower than it should be. Before you call your ISP or upgrade your plan, try these fixes — most of them are free and take under 10 minutes.
1. Restart Your Router (Properly)
Unplug from the wall. Wait 30 seconds (not 5). Plug back in. Wait 2 minutes for full restart. This clears congested routing tables and often resolves slowdowns immediately.
2. Move Your Router
Router placement is everything. Center of the home, elevated (not on the floor), away from walls and metal objects. Avoid the corner of a room — you're wasting half the signal pushing it into walls.
3. Change the Channel
Your router broadcasts on channels. If neighbors use the same channel, interference slows speeds. Log into your router admin page and switch channels (1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz are non-overlapping).
4. Use 5GHz for Close Devices
Most modern routers are dual-band. 5GHz is faster but shorter range. 2.4GHz is slower but longer range. Connect devices close to the router to 5GHz.
5. Check for Bandwidth Hogs
Log into your router admin and check connected devices. Old devices, security cameras, and smart home devices can quietly eat bandwidth.
6. Update Router Firmware
Manufacturers release performance and security updates. Check your router admin for firmware updates.
