The Annual Digital Declutter Checklist That Keeps Your Devices Fast

Digital clutter is just as mentally draining as physical clutter. A thorough digital declutter once a year keeps your devices fast, your mind clear, and your data secure.

Phone (2 hours)

  • Delete every app you haven't used in 3 months
  • Clear all streaming caches (Settings for each app)
  • Review and delete downloaded files
  • Back up photos, then clear camera roll of duplicates and blurry shots
  • Unsubscribe from any app notifications you always dismiss

Email (1 hour)

  • Unsubscribe from every newsletter you don't read (use Unroll.me or do it manually)
  • Delete all promotional emails in bulk
  • Archive everything older than 3 months into one folder
  • Create 3 folders: Action, Waiting, Reference

Computer (2 hours)

  • Empty Trash / Recycle Bin
  • Clear Downloads folder
  • Remove duplicate files (use a duplicate finder app)
  • Uninstall software you haven't opened in 6 months
  • Clear browser bookmarks of dead links
  • Update all software

Cloud Storage (30 minutes)

  • Delete duplicate files in Google Drive / iCloud / Dropbox
  • Remove shared files no longer needed

Schedule this quarterly. 90 minutes prevents the 5-hour annual emergency.
