Noise-Cancelling Headphones Explained: How They Work and What to Buy
Noise-cancelling headphones have become essential tools for productivity, travel, and focus. Here's how they work and what to look for.
How ANC Works
Active Noise Cancellation uses microphones to sample incoming sound, then generates an opposite sound wave (phase-inverted) that cancels it out. It's most effective against consistent low-frequency noise (plane engines, AC, road noise) and less effective against sudden, high-pitched sounds.
ANC vs Passive Isolation
Passive isolation = physical blocking of sound with padded cups. ANC = electronic cancellation. Best headphones use both. In-ear tips (IEMs) provide excellent passive isolation even without ANC.
