How to Speed Up a Slow PC Without Buying New Hardware
Your PC runs slower over time for specific, fixable reasons. Here's how to restore speed without buying new hardware.
Step 1: Disable Startup Programs (Biggest Impact)
Every program that launches at startup slows boot time and uses RAM continuously. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup tab. Disable everything that isn't essential (antivirus and drivers can stay).
Step 2: Check What's Using Resources Right Now
Task Manager → Performance tab. If CPU or RAM is consistently above 80%, identify which process is responsible under the Processes tab.
Step 3: Disk Cleanup
Windows: search 'Disk Cleanup'. Run it including system files. Typically frees 5-20GB.
Step 4: Check Your Storage Drive
An SSD under 10-15% free space becomes dramatically slower. Delete large files or transfer to an external drive.
Step 5: Update Everything
Windows updates, driver updates (especially GPU drivers), and BIOS updates often contain performance fixes.
Step 6: Scan for Malware
Malwarebytes free version. Run a full scan. Remove anything found.
Step 7: Upgrade RAM (If Applicable)
If RAM is consistently at 80%+, 8GB is insufficient for modern use. Upgrading to 16GB is often the single most impactful hardware upgrade.
When to Consider New Hardware
If your CPU is 7+ years old and you're running modern software, hardware replacement may be more cost-effective than continued maintenance.
