7 Natural Ways to Ease Period Cramps That Actually Work

Period cramps are real, often debilitating, and shockingly under-discussed. Drugs work, but they're not the only option. Here are seven evidence-based ways to ease them naturally.

1. Heat Therapy

The most consistently studied non-drug option. A heating belt for menstrual cramps applied to the lower abdomen for 30+ minutes provides comparable relief to ibuprofen for many people.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium glycinate or citrate — 200–400mg daily. Helps relax uterine muscles.

3. Gentle Movement

Counterintuitive, but moving helps. Walking, light yoga, or stretching increases blood flow and reduces cramping.

4. Omega-3s

Fish oil reduces prostaglandins (the compounds that cause cramps).

5. Acupressure Point: SP6

Three finger-widths above your inner ankle bone. Press firmly for 1–2 minutes on each side.

6. Hydration With Electrolytes

Dehydration intensifies cramps. Add electrolytes to water during your period.

7. Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol

Both can intensify cramping. Try cutting them the week before your period.

When to See a Doctor

If cramps are severe, getting worse over time, or accompanied by other symptoms (heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pain) — see a doctor. Endometriosis and PCOS are often missed.
