The Complete Guide to Sunscreen: Why It's the Best Anti-Aging Product You Own

Sunscreen is the most evidence-backed anti-aging product in existence. Yet most people either skip it or use it wrong. Here's the complete guide.

Why SPF Is Non-Negotiable

UV radiation causes 80-90% of visible skin aging (wrinkles, dark spots, sagging). It also causes melanoma. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks 98%. The difference is minimal — consistency matters more than number.

The Two Types

Chemical Sunscreen

Absorbs UV. Lightweight, invisible, great for daily use and under makeup. Examples: avobenzone, oxybenzone. Needs 15-30 minutes to activate.

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen

Reflects UV. Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Works immediately. Better for sensitive skin. Can leave a white cast (newer formulas minimize this).

How Much to Apply

Most people apply 25-50% of the recommended amount. For face: a nickel-sized dollop. For body: one shot glass per application.

Reapplication

Every 2 hours outdoors. After swimming or sweating regardless of time.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping SPF on cloudy days (UV penetrates clouds)
  • Relying on SPF in foundation (coverage is uneven)
  • Forgetting neck, ears, and hands
  • Not using SPF indoors if near windows (UVA penetrates glass)
