The Complete Guide to Building Stronger Glutes

Glute training is one of the most searched fitness topics for good reason: the glutes are the largest muscle group in the body, and well-developed glutes improve posture, reduce lower back pain, and increase athletic performance.

Anatomy First

The glutes have three muscles: gluteus maximus (the large visible one), gluteus medius (upper outer hip), and gluteus minimus (deep stabilizer). Effective training hits all three.

The Most Effective Glute Exercises

For Gluteus Maximus

  • Hip thrust (most effective glute exercise per EMG research)
  • Romanian deadlift
  • Bulgarian split squat
  • Sumo squat

For Gluteus Medius

  • Clamshells with resistance band
  • Side-lying abduction
  • Lateral band walk
  • Curtsy lunge

The Glute-Building Rules

  • Train glutes 2-3x per week
  • Progressive overload is essential (add weight or reps over time)
  • Full range of motion beats partial reps
  • Mind-muscle connection matters: consciously squeeze the glute at the top of each rep

Common Mistakes

  • Squatting with too narrow a stance (engages quads more than glutes)
  • Not hinging at the hip during deadlifts
  • Not achieving full hip extension at the top of hip thrusts
