How to Read Your Sleep Tracker Data and Actually Sleep Better

Sleep tracking has gone mainstream with smartwatches and apps. But what do the numbers actually mean? Here's how to interpret your sleep data and use it to sleep better.

The Sleep Stages

Light Sleep (N1, N2)

The transition into and between deeper stages. N2 includes sleep spindles important for memory consolidation. Makes up ~50% of total sleep.

Deep Sleep (N3 / Slow Wave Sleep)

Physical recovery stage. Growth hormone release. Immune system repair. Memory consolidation. Hard to wake from. Adults need 1-2 hours. Decreases with age.

REM Sleep

Dreaming stage. Emotional processing, creativity, learning consolidation. Typically occurs in longer cycles in the second half of the night.

What Your Tracker Is Actually Measuring

Consumer devices estimate sleep stages using heart rate variability and movement. They're ~70-80% accurate for total sleep time but less accurate for individual stage breakdown. Use trends, not single-night data.

What Good Sleep Data Looks Like

  • Total sleep: 7-9 hours
  • Deep sleep: 15-20% of total (70-100 minutes)
  • REM: 20-25% of total (90-120 minutes)
  • Sleep efficiency: 85%+ (time asleep vs time in bed)
  • Resting heart rate: your personal baseline

Using the Data

Look for patterns over 2-4 weeks. Late alcohol = less REM. Exercise = more deep sleep. Consistent bedtime = better overall quality.
