How to Care for the Eye Area: Dark Circles, Puffiness, and Fine Lines

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body — which is why it shows aging, dehydration, and fatigue first. Here's how to care for it properly.

Why Eye Cream Isn't Optional

Regular facial moisturizers are often too heavy or contain ingredients (retinol at standard concentrations, some acids) that irritate the delicate eye area. A dedicated eye cream is formulated for this thinner, more sensitive skin.

Key Ingredients for Common Concerns

Dark Circles

Vitamin C (brightening), caffeine (constricts blood vessels), niacinamide (reduces pigmentation), retinol (at low concentrations).

Puffiness

Caffeine (most effective), cucumber extract, green tea extract. Cold application helps — store eye cream in the fridge.

Fine Lines and Crow's Feet

Retinol (start at 0.025% around eyes), peptides, hyaluronic acid, ceramides.

Application Technique

Use your ring finger (least pressure). Apply by patting, never rubbing or dragging. Start at the inner corner and work outward. Apply to the orbital bone, not directly on the eyelid.

Lifestyle Factors (Often More Impactful Than Products)

  • Sleep position: back sleeping reduces puffiness from fluid pooling
  • Salt intake: high sodium causes water retention and puffiness
  • Screen time: reduced blinking causes dryness and strain
  • Sunglasses: reduces squinting that causes crow's feet
