Maximalist Interior Design: How to Go Bold Without Going Chaotic

Maximalism is the fearless antidote to minimalism — more pattern, more color, more texture, more personality. Done right, it's layered and considered. Here's how to go bold without going chaotic.

The Maximalist Mindset

Maximalism isn't about cramming more stuff in. It's about intentional abundance — choosing things you genuinely love and displaying them confidently. The opposite of minimalism isn't clutter. It's exuberance.

The Rules of Controlled Maximalism

1. Pick a Color Story

Even maximalist spaces have a color logic. Jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, ruby, amber) together. Or warm earth tones in abundance. Without color cohesion, maximalism reads as mess.

2. Every Pattern Shares a Color

Mix patterns freely, but ensure they share at least one color. This creates harmony within complexity.

3. Edit Ruthlessly

Maximalism includes only things you love. Things you merely own but don't love get removed. Less beloved things + more of them = clutter. More beloved things = maximalism.

Key Elements

  • Gallery walls floor to ceiling
  • Bold, saturated paint colors (never plain white)
  • Layered textiles: velvet, silk, brocade, fringe
  • Plants — many and large
  • Collections displayed, not hidden

Where to Start

One room, one wall. Turn the gallery wall up to 11. Add one oversized plant. Bold cushions on the sofa. Build from there.
