How to Find, Choose, and Hang Art in Your Home at Any Budget

Artwork transforms a space more than almost any other element — but buying art can feel intimidating or expensive. Here's how to find, choose, and hang artwork at every budget.

Finding Art Without Breaking the Budget

  • Etsy: Printable digital downloads from $5-25. Print at a local print shop or home printer.
  • Unsplash and Pexels: Free high-resolution photography for personal use.
  • Art fairs and local artists: Often more affordable than galleries with more personality.
  • Thrift stores: Occasionally yield gems. More reliably yield great frames for your own prints.
  • Society6, Redbubble: Independent artist prints in a huge range of styles.

Choosing Art That Works in Your Space

Match the scale to the wall. A small print on a large wall looks timid. A large piece on a small wall looks bold and intentional. When in doubt, go bigger.

Art Styles by Interior Style

  • Minimalist: Abstract, line art, black and white photography
  • Bohemian: Tapestries, botanical prints, folk art
  • Scandi: Simple typography, nature photography, geometric prints
  • Traditional: Oil painting reproductions, portraits, landscapes

Hanging Heights

The center of artwork should be at eye level: 57-60 inches from the floor. Over furniture, the bottom of the frame should be 6-8 inches above the piece.
