How to Style Vases: The Rules for Every Room

Vases are one of the most versatile decorative tools. Here's how to style them so they look intentional rather than random.

The Three-Vase Grouping

Group three vases of different heights together. Tall + medium + short. Same color family, different shapes. This is the most consistently elegant vase arrangement.

With or Without Flowers

A quality vase doesn't need flowers to look good. A simple white ceramic vase or a sculptural glass vase looks beautiful empty. Save florals for when you want to make a moment.

What to Put in Vases

  • Fresh flowers (obviously)
  • Dried pampas grass or eucalyptus — lasts months
  • Dried lavender bunches
  • Branches (magnolia, cherry blossom, olive)
  • Cotton stems
  • Simple greenery from the garden
  • Nothing (if the vase is beautiful enough)

Color Rules

White vases with any flower — always works. Clear glass with any stem — always works. Colored vases need more careful flower pairing.

Placement

  • Entry table: one tall statement vase
  • Dining table: low arrangement so diners can see each other
  • Mantelpiece: asymmetric grouping with candles
  • Bathroom: small bud vase with a single stem
