How to Style Cushions and Throws Like an Interior Designer
Cushions and throws are the fastest, most reversible way to change a room's feel. Here's how to choose, arrange, and combine them like a stylist.
The Cushion Formula
For a sofa, use an odd number: 3 or 5. Pair large cushions (22") at the back with smaller ones (18") in front. A lumbar cushion in the center adds polish.
Mixing Patterns
Combine one solid, one pattern, one texture. Example: plain linen + geometric print + chunky knit. The solid anchors, the pattern adds interest, the texture adds depth.
Color Rules
Cushions should pull from at least two colors in the room. One or two cushions in an accent color (rust, sage, terracotta) can tie together a neutral room.
The Throw Rule
Throws look best draped casually — not folded perfectly, not thrown randomly. Drape over one arm of the sofa and let it fall naturally. Or fold loosely and place over one corner.
Layering on the Bed
Two sleeping pillows + two euro pillows (26") behind + two decorative cushions in front + one lumbar cushion. This is the hotel-bed layering formula.
How to Keep It Looking Fresh
- Rotate and fluff cushions weekly
- Wash covers every 4-6 weeks
- Swap seasonal covers (velvet in winter, linen in summer)
- Store off-season covers in a vacuum bag
