How to Design a Home Office That Makes You Actually Want to Work

A home office that works for you — not against you — requires getting a few key decisions right. Here's how to design one that's productive, comfortable, and worth looking at on video calls.

Location First

Ideally a separate room with a door. If not: a corner with a visual boundary (bookshelf, curtain, rug). The brain benefits from a defined work zone separate from rest zones.

The Desk Setup

  • Monitor at eye level (use a stand if needed)
  • Keyboard and mouse at elbow height
  • Enough surface area to work without shuffling papers
  • Cable management from day one

Lighting for Work

Natural light is best — position the desk perpendicular to windows (not facing into or away from the window, which causes glare or shadows). Supplement with an eye-care LED lamp that adjusts color temperature.

The Video Call Background

What's behind you matters professionally. A clean wall with simple decor, a styled bookshelf, or a plant backdrop all read as competent and put-together. A cluttered background or a bare beige wall both look unprofessional.

Ergonomics

Chair height: feet flat on the floor. Screen distance: arm's length. Top of monitor: at eye level or slightly below. A lumbar cushion prevents lower back pain during long sessions.

The Vibe

One plant, a good lamp, and one piece you genuinely like looking at (art, a photograph, a beautiful object). These make 8-hour sessions in the same space more tolerable.
