How to Choose the Right Scented Candle for Every Room
Scented candles do more than smell good. The right scent changes how a space feels — and how you feel in it. Here's how to choose and use them correctly.
Choosing by Room
Living Room
Warm, inviting scents: amber, sandalwood, vanilla, cedar. These welcome guests and create a sense of home.
Bedroom
Calming, sleep-inducing: lavender, chamomile, vetiver, ylang-ylang. Avoid citrus or peppermint — too energizing.
Kitchen
Fresh, food-compatible: lemon, basil, eucalyptus. Avoid heavy florals that compete with food smells.
Bathroom
Spa-like: eucalyptus, peppermint, sea salt, white tea. Clean and refreshing.
Home Office
Focus-boosting: rosemary, peppermint, lemon, bergamot. Avoid anything too relaxing.
Candle Care Rules
- First burn: Let it burn until the entire top is liquid (2-3 hours). This prevents tunneling.
- Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every burn.
- Never burn longer than 4 hours at a time.
- Stop when 1/2 inch of wax remains.
Layering Scents
Use complementary candles in adjacent rooms. Vanilla in the living room and lavender in the bedroom create a gentle transition rather than a scent clash.
